Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Breville manual.
What does the display say?
- OFF: Grill is off and ready to be set. Shows after you plug the grill in or after you turn the temperature dial to the off position.
- HEATING: Grill is heating up. Shows while the grill is reaching, or maintaining, the temperature you selected. It can appear again during cooking, which is normal.
- INSERT PLATE: A cooking plate is not locked in. The grill does not sense the top or bottom plate seated correctly.
- Err: Grill is in error mode. The grill has detected a fault and stopped working normally.
Common problems
The screen shows Err and the grill stopped working
- Unplug the grill Remove the power plug from the wall outlet.
- Let it cool down fully Make sure the grill is completely cool before going further.
- Check the plates are seated correctly Both cooking plates need to be fully and securely inserted.
- Plug it back in If Err still shows after this, the problem continues and you should call Breville.
Screen keeps showing INSERT PLATE
- Is the grill completely cool? Always let the grill cool fully before removing or re-fitting the cooking plates.
- Remove and re-seat both plates Use the two plate release buttons to take both plates off, then slide them back on until they click into place.
The grill keeps heating and won't turn off
- Did you only pause the timer? Pausing or clearing the count-down timer does not turn the grill off, it keeps heating.
- Turn the temperature dial to OFF This is the only way to stop the heating and cooking cycle.
- Check the screen confirms it is off The screen shows OFF and the default time, then the backlight goes out after 3 minutes.
- Left it untouched for over an hour? The grill shuts off heating on its own if the dials are not touched for 1 hour.
Food isn't cooking evenly or grill feels too cool
- Did you wait for full preheat? Always let the grill completely preheat to the selected temperature before putting food on it.
- Is HEATING showing during cooking? That is normal, it just means the grill is keeping the correct temperature.
- Is the top plate resting level on the food? Use the adjustable height control so the floating top plate sits evenly on thinner or thicker food.
