Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Breville manual.
Which light or button pattern do you see?
- Descale alert LED flashing: Descaling is due soon. The machine still works but mineral scale is building up and needs clearing before it blocks the machine.
- Descale alert LED solid on: Machine is blocked until you descale. You kept using the machine after the flashing warning, so it has now locked brewing until descaling is done.
- Clean Steam Wand alert LED is on: Steam wand needs cleaning. The machine has detected a blocked wand, or it has reached 90 milk cycles since the last clean.
- Buttons not illuminated: Machine looks off or unresponsive. The water tank may be empty, the machine may have gone to sleep, or the outlet may have no power.
- Buttons flashing: Machine needs something before it will brew. This usually means the water tank is empty, the steam tip is blocked, or descaling or steam wand cleaning is needed.
Common problems
No coffee or water comes out, or the flow looks wrong
- Is the water tank fitted and filled? Make sure the tank sits correctly on the machine, and fill it with potable water if it is empty.
- Does the machine need descaling? Scale build-up can slow or block the coffee flow.
Water is leaking out under the machine
- Is the drip tray full? Empty the drip tray if it is full.
- Is the drip tray pushed in properly? Make sure the drip tray is securely inserted into the machine.
- Still leaking? If the leak continues after checking the tray, contact Nespresso.
No steam or hot water comes out
- Is the machine turned on? Press Ristretto, Espresso, or Lungo to bring it into ON mode.
- Is the descale or steam wand clean LED lit? If either alert LED is on, descale the machine or clean the steam wand.
- Try a manual purge Press and hold the Steam button for 3 seconds to force a purge.
- Check the power outlet Check the plug, voltage, and fuse at the wall outlet.
Milk isn't frothing properly
- Are you using the right milk, cold? Use pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed milk straight from the fridge, about 4-6°C, and newly opened for best results.
- Is the froth level setting right for your drink? Check the milk froth setting matches what you want.
- Have you cleaned the jug and wand lately? Clean both the milk jug and the steam wand after every use.
- Could the steam wand be blocked? A blocked wand affects froth quality, so clean it.
