Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Miele manual.
What does the display or a light show?
- Power level flashing: No pan, or the wrong pan. The power level you set blinks because there is no pan on the zone, the pan is not induction-suitable, or it has been taken off.
- Dot above power level 1, 2 or 3: Residual heat warning. A dot above levels 1 to 3 shows the cooking zone is still hot after being switched off. The dots go out one by one as it cools.
- Cooking zone allocation light pulsates: Auto switch-off timer running. A pulsing light next to a cooking zone shows its auto switch-off time is the shortest one left.
- Brief symbol and tone when a sensor is touched: System lock or safety lock is on. If you touch a sensor while a lock is active, a symbol flashes briefly and a tone sounds.
- Hob off, symbol above On/Off sensor: A sensor control was covered. The hob switches itself off if a sensor stays covered for too long, for example by a finger, spilled food or a cloth.
- Fault symbol flashes with a tone: Wiring fault. If the hob is wired up incorrectly, a fault symbol flashes with a tone and the hob will not work.
- Overheating symbol flashes: Overheating protection has activated. If a coil or a cooling part gets too hot, the Booster switches off, the power level drops, or the zone switches off, with a symbol flashing in the display.
- Fault symbol flashes, fan warning: Cooling fan blocked or faulty. A fault symbol flashes if the cooling fan is blocked or broken.
- Unlisted message in the timer display: Electronic module fault. Any message not shown elsewhere in this guide points to a fault in the electronics.
Common problems
The hob won't switch on
- Is the system lock or safety lock turned on? Touching a sensor while a lock is on just flashes a symbol and sounds a tone. Turn off the lock to use the hob.
- Is the hob in demonstration mode? In demo mode the hob switches on but does not heat up.
- Has the mains fuse tripped? Check the fuse box. If a fuse has tripped, contact an electrician or Miele Service.
- Could there be a technical fault? Cut power to the hob at the fuse box or RCD for about a minute, then try it again.
The hob switches itself off
- Are the sensor controls covered or dirty? Finger contact, boiling-over food or an object left on the controls can trigger a safety switch-off.
- Has a cooking zone been on for an unusually long time? The safety switch-off turns off a zone that has run too long for its power level. Switch it back on to use it again.
- Has the overheating protection activated? A zone or the whole hob can switch off if the overheating protection trips.
- Is the cooling fan blocked? Check that nothing is blocking the fan and clear any obstruction. If it keeps happening, contact Miele Service.
A cooking zone won't heat up properly
- Is there a suitable pan on the zone? Induction only works with pans that have a magnetic base of the right size.
- Is the pan's base too small? If the base is too small for the zone, the hob will not recognise it and the power level will flash.
- Are both zones set to power level 9 at the same time? Running both zones at level 9 together exceeds the hob's maximum power, so one level is reduced automatically.
- Does the pan conduct heat well? If food isn't heating with Auto heat-up, the pan may not conduct heat properly; try a different one.
There's a smell, vapour or noise from the hob
- Is this a new hob, or one of its first uses? A protective coating on new metal parts can give off a harmless smell and vapour that fades with use.
- Do you hear a noise after switching off? That is the cooling fan, which keeps running until the hob has cooled down.
- Do you hear buzzing, crackling or whistling while cooking? These are normal pan noises on induction and change with the pan and power setting used.
Step-by-step guides
Clean the hob
- Switch off the hob and let the cooking zones cool down.
- Wipe off coarse dirt with a damp cloth.
- Scrape off stubborn marks with a glass-safe scraper blade.
- Clean the ceramic top with a proper ceramic and stainless steel cleaner.
- Wipe with a damp cloth, then polish with a soft dry cloth.
- Dry the hob fully to avoid limescale marks.
Remove melted sugar, plastic or foil from the hob
- Switch off the cooking zone straight away.
- Put on oven gloves before touching the hot surface.
- Scrape off the residue straight away while it is still hot.
- Once the surface has cooled, clean it as usual.
Reset the hob after a fault
- Check whether the mains fuse has tripped.
- Cut power to the hob by tripping the mains fuse, removing it, or switching off the residual current device.
- Leave the power off for about 1 minute.
- Reset the trip switch or fuse to restore power.
- If it still won't switch on, contact a qualified electrician or Miele Service.
