Weber Genesis E-435
Answers and step-by-step fixes from the official Weber manual.
Common problems
Burner won't light
- Is gas actually flowing to the burner? Light a match and hold it near the burner while turning the knob to the start/high position to see if gas is flowing.
- Did the match light the burner? If the match lights the burner, the problem is in the ignition system, not the gas supply.
- Is the ignition battery good? Remove any plastic wrap from the battery, confirm it is installed correctly, and swap in a new battery if it's old.
- Are the ignition wires connected? Check that the ignition wires are securely attached to the ignition button and to the ignition module.
Getting flare-ups or a greasy, flaky lid
- Did you preheat before cooking? Always preheat the barbecue on the highest setting for 10 to 15 minutes before putting food on.
- Is there leftover grease or food inside? Build-up from the last meal causes flare-ups. Clean the inside of the barbecue thoroughly.
- Does the lid have flakes that look like peeling paint? That's carbonised grease and smoke, not paint, and it can fall onto food if the lid isn't cleaned.
Barbecue won't reach temperature or heats unevenly
- Is the fuel hose bent or kinked? A kinked hose restricts gas flow. Straighten it out.
- Are the burner ports dirty? Dirty ports cause low flame or uneven heat. Clean them with a stainless steel brush.
- Do the flames run the full length of the burner? Short or erratic flame patterns point to a gas flow or port problem.
Smell gas with yellow, lazy flames
- Are the spider screens blocked? Insect nests or debris on the spider screens can block normal gas flow and push gas back out of the burner.
- Do the flames look yellow and lazy along with the smell? That combination is the sign of a blocked spider screen and needs attention right away.
- Have you cleaned the spider screens? Clean each spider screen with a soft bristle brush to clear the blockage.
Step-by-step guides
Light a burner with a match
- Open the barbecue lid.
- Check that all burner control knobs are off.
- Confirm the gas supply is connected.
- Put a match in the matchstick holder and strike it.
- Insert the lit match down near the burner, past the Flavorizer bars.
- Push the knob in and slowly turn it to the start/high position.
- Check the burner is lit by looking through the grills.
- If it doesn't light within 4 seconds, turn off and wait before trying again.
Check for gas leaks
- Mix a soap and water solution.
- Dampen the hose fittings with the solution.
- Watch each fitting for bubbles forming.
- If there's a leak at the bayonet fitting, turn off the gas and don't use the barbecue.
- If there's a leak at another fitting, retighten it with a wrench and recheck.
- Once clear, turn off the gas supply and rinse the connections with water.
Clean the burner ports and spider screens
- Turn the barbecue off and let it cool.
- Brush across the top of the burner ports with the stainless steel brush.
- Brush carefully around the ignition electrode so you don't damage it.
- Find where the burners meet the valves under the control panel.
- Clean the spider screens with the soft bristle brush.
