Our Verdict

Live answering services take messages and general AI call answering books jobs, but a boat or outboard dealer whose weekend callers need running-in, starting, trailer and warranty answers gets the most from a genie trained on its own engine manuals and stock.

Saturday, 6.40am, at the boat ramp. A customer who picked up a new trailer boat on Thursday turns the key and gets nothing. Your service desk opens on Monday. The answer is in the outboard manual, in a drawer at home.

Boat and outboard dealers live with this every weekend of the season. The busiest hours for owner questions are exactly the hours nobody is at the desk.

This page compares the options NZ and Australian marine dealers have for those calls, with prices as of September 2026. We build Help Genie, so weigh our entry accordingly.

Where the calls come from

New Zealand has an estimated 214,000 outboard boats, and retail outboard sales settled at around 6,000 to 6,500 units a year by 2025, according to Boating New Zealand. Most are trailer boats, and most owners use them on weekends and holidays.

The questions are practical, urgent and usually asked from a ramp or a driveway.

  • Running in a new outboard. How hard can I run it, and for how long. Yamaha and Mercury both describe a break-in period of about 10 hours, with limits on wide-open throttle, per Mercury and a Yamaha schedule summary. The first service usually falls soon after.
  • It will not start. Kill cord, fuel, battery, neutral and trim. Most of these are fixed in two minutes by someone who knows where to look.
  • Maintenance and flushing. Yamaha’s Australian parts guide says to flush after every use, for at least 10 minutes, per Yamaha Parts Australia. Owners ask how, and what to do before laying the boat up for the off-season.
  • Warranty registration. Mercury warranty depends on the authorised dealer registering the engine at sale, and on maintenance done to the schedule, per Mercury NZ. “Did you register my motor?” is a common call.
  • Electronics. Chartplotter set-up and a transducer that stopped reading.
  • Trailers and towing. Brakes, bearings, lights and what the tow vehicle can legally pull.
  • Rules and licences. Who needs a licence and what safety gear must be on board.
  • Service and parts. First services, pre-season checks and props.

The rules owners ask about

In New Zealand you do not need a licence to skipper a recreational boat, but skippers must follow the maritime rules and local bylaws, per Maritime NZ. New in September 2026, Parliament passed a law requiring everyone on a recreational craft of 6 metres or less to wear a lifejacket while it is underway, per Yachting New Zealand. It takes effect this summer, with exemptions for surfing, sports events and SUP surfing, per 1News. Expect a spike in “does this apply to my boat?” calls.

Australia licenses by state. In New South Wales you need a boat licence to drive at 10 knots or more, per the NSW Government. In Queensland you need a marine licence for a boat with an engine over 4.5kW, per the Queensland Government.

Trailers differ too. In New Zealand, brakes are required on trailers over 2000kg laden. In Australia, a trailer over 750kg needs brakes, and over 2000kg it needs brakes on all wheels and a breakaway system, as summarised by Trailer Sauce.

What a genie answers from the engine manual

A genie answers from the documents you load, such as engine manuals, electronics guides, trailer specs and your warranty policy. These examples show the shape of it. The answers come from your own documents.

  1. “Brand new motor. How hard can I run it this weekend?” Reads out the running-in schedule for that exact engine, including throttle limits and hours.
  2. “It cranks but won’t start at the ramp.” Walks through the checks in the manual, such as kill cord clipped on, fuel tank vent open, primer bulb firm and gear in neutral. If none of that works, it takes their details for the service team.
  3. “How do I flush it after a salt water trip?” Gives the flush port or muff steps for that model, and how long to run the water.
  4. “When is the first service, and did you register my warranty?” Quotes the interval from your schedule, explains how warranty registration works with your brand, and logs a request for your team to confirm the registration.
  5. “Can my SUV tow the 6.2 metre package, and does the trailer have brakes?” Answers from the trailer spec on your stock page, explains the braking rule that applies, and reminds the caller to check their vehicle’s towing rating. Buyers go to sales as a lead.
  6. “The depth sounder stopped reading after I launched.” Runs through the transducer and settings checks from the electronics manual.
  7. “Do we all have to wear lifejackets now?” Explains the new New Zealand rule for craft of 6 metres or less, from the note you add to its knowledge.

Anything that needs a technician, a price or a judgement call goes to your team with the conversation written up. You can hear a marine genie answer on the marine demo, ring +64 9 886 4856, or send us your manual and we will build one on it.

The support options a marine dealer has

1. Help Genie (our product, disclosure)

Help Genie builds one genie trained on your website, engine manuals, trailer specs and service policy. It answers by voice and chat on your phone line, website, email and a QR code on the console. It is a first layer of product support, and it captures buyers as sales leads with their details emailed to your team.

Best for: Dealers whose weekend calls are “how do I” questions from owners, plus buyers asking about stock.

Honest trade-off: It is voice AI, with no human answering team. It does not book into your workshop or DMS out of the box. It captures the request and hands it over.

Pricing: Free plan to build and test. Pro is $299 a month flat and includes the phone number, chat, web, QR and email from one knowledge base. No per-call or per-minute meter, so a busy long weekend costs the same as a quiet one. Prices are NZD and the same figures in AUD. See pricing.

Where it wins: Real answers from the engine manual at the ramp, in 40+ languages.

Where it falls short: It cannot diagnose a failed powerhead. A caller with a boat taking on water needs the Coastguard or emergency services, not a genie, and your knowledge should say so plainly.

2. Voicemail, or the service manager’s mobile

The shop line goes to voicemail at 5pm Friday, or diverts to whoever is on call.

Best for: A small dealer with few new engines on the water.

Honest trade-off: A caller at the ramp will not wait until Monday. They call a mate, or the dealer down the road.

Pricing: Free, apart from the weekends it eats.

Where it falls short: Does not scale into peak season. See Help Genie vs voicemail.

3. Live answering services (CallCare, ReceptionHQ)

Human receptionists answer under your name and pass on a message.

CallCare answers from Blenheim, 24 hours a day including weekends and public holidays, with a 7-day free trial and month-to-month plans. Plan prices are not published, you request a pricing PDF. An 0800 number is NZ$50 a month plus GST, per its pricing page.

ReceptionHQ serves Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, with an overnight team in Australia. It publishes US dollar pricing from US$25 a month, with US$1.99 per extra call on the message-taking plan, per its pricing page.

Best for: Dealers who want a person on the line and mainly need messages taken.

Honest trade-off: The receptionist does not know your outboards. “It won’t start” becomes a callback.

Pricing: CallCare not published. ReceptionHQ from US$25 a month plus per-call overage.

Where it wins: A calm human voice for a stressed caller.

Where it falls short: Messages, not answers, and costs rise in the busy months. The trade-offs are covered in AI vs a live answering service.

4. General AI call answering (Johnni, Sophiie)

Australian voice AI products for inbound calls, built mostly for trades.

Johnni publishes plans from A$44 a month for 60 minutes to A$809 a month for 1,500 minutes, excluding GST, with overage from A$0.35 to A$0.50 a minute. Sophiie does not publish prices. Third-party reviews report around A$300 a month plus about A$400 setup, not confirmed by the vendor, per ServiceScale.

Best for: Dealers whose calls are mostly service bookings into a job tool these products connect to.

Honest trade-off: Built for booking a tradie, not walking an owner through a no-start. Minute meters punish long calls.

Pricing: Johnni A$44 to A$809 a month plus GST and overage. Sophiie not published.

Where it wins: Direct calendar and job-software booking, which Help Genie does not claim.

Where it falls short: Set up for trades, not engine support.

5. Your marine DMS (Ultimate, Revolution)

Marine dealers run sales, parts, service and accounting on systems such as Ultimate, which says it is used by 600+ dealerships in Australia and New Zealand, and Revolution DMS. Pricing is quote only.

Best for: Running the business. Every dealer needs one.

Honest trade-off: It holds the service history. It does not answer the owner at the ramp.

Pricing: Quote only.

Where it falls short: No owner-facing answers. Something still has to take the call.

Best option by scenario

New engines on the water every weekend of summer. A genie trained on your engine manuals, with a QR code on the console.

You want a person answering and messages are enough. CallCare or ReceptionHQ.

Your calls are mostly workshop bookings and you run ServiceM8 or Simpro. Johnni or Sophiie are worth a trial.

You sell caravans or motorhomes as well. See the caravan and RV dealer version of this page.

Small dealer, a handful of sales a year. Voicemail may be enough. Run your numbers through the ROI calculator before you decide.

Before, the ramp call waits until Monday
  • Weekend calls hit voicemail or one tired mobile
  • No-start and running-in questions become callbacks
  • Warranty and first-service questions answered from memory

FAQ

Can a genie handle an emergency on the water? No, and it should not try. Put a clear instruction in its knowledge to direct anyone in danger to emergency services or the Coastguard, and keep it to practical how-to questions.

Does it know every engine brand we sell? It knows the manuals you load. Load the operation manuals for the Yamaha, Mercury, Honda or Suzuki models you stock and it answers for each one.

Will it register warranties or book the workshop? Not directly. It explains how registration and service work, captures the engine model, hours and contact details, and emails that to your team. Deeper DMS write-back is scoped per deal.

How is this different from a live answering service? A receptionist takes a message. A genie answers the question from your manual, then hands on what it cannot solve. See Help Genie vs answering services.

How long does it take to set up? Under an hour from your website, with no developer. Browse the marine hub for more on how marine dealers use it.

The bottom line

Marine dealers get their hardest support questions on weekends, from owners standing at a ramp with a new motor. Running in, starting, flushing, trailers, warranty and now lifejacket rules.

Voicemail and live answering services take a message. General AI call answering books jobs. A genie trained on your own engine manuals answers the question while the customer is still at the water.
